Buena wrestlers have tough time in Tucson

TUCSON — The Buena High School wrestling team traveled to Marana Mountain View for an evening of competitive wrestling that also included powerhouse Sunnyside.

Sunnyside and Marana Mountain View are defending state champions in their respective divisions. The Buena wrestlers clearly understood tonight’s competition would be intense. Buena began the competition against Mountain View. Buena came up on the short end of the score, losing 50-24.

Winning matches were Anthony Trujillo at 120, Billy Ballesteros at 126, Josh Kirk at 170 and Manaia Fruean at 285.

In the second competition of the evening, Buena lost to Sunnyside 53-18.

Winning matches for the Colts were Tommy Hays at 132, Jayden Hernandez at 145, Aidan McCann at 152 and Dev’yon Johnson at 220.

Losing a heartbreaker in overtime was Fruean at 285.

Overall, the Colts wrestled well, but fine-tuning their skills continues.

The Colts travel to Marana on Thursday night for a 24-team tournament on Friday and Saturday.
