PHOENIX — Cochise College (29-6) took on Gateway Community College for a road doubleheader on Saturday, March 23. The games were played at South Mountain Community College’s field as Gateway was unable to use their field at Gene Autry Park.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jake Rogers and his 7-0 record took the mound in game one. Rogers struggled to put away Gateway’s hitters as they scored three runs in the first inning. Rogers would only last 4-plus innings in this one and would go on to take his first loss of the season. Offensively the Apaches had their opportunities but could not take advantage of them. Cochise squared up baseballs right at defenders as Gateway’s pitcher was only able to strike out one batter in 7 innings of work. The Apaches however, would take the loss in game one by a score of 7-2.
Cochise looked to bounce back in game two for the split. The Apaches would find themselves down against the Geckos 3-0 in the third inning but would bounce back for three runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning. This game would go back and forth with the Apaches down 5-3 going into the eighth inning. Cochise would get a late push and score three big runs in the eighth inning to take a 6-5 lead. The Geckos, however, would respond for one run of their own in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game 6-6. This game would eventually go into extra innings as Gateway was held scoreless late in the game thanks to the solid relief appearances by freshman right-handed pitcher Isiah Campa and sophomore right-handed pitcher Pedro Perdomo. Going into the 11th inning sophomore outfielder George Sutherland would lead off the inning with a huge go-ahead HR over the right field fence. Perdomo would go on to get the win on the mound with a big strikeout to end the game. The Apaches would win this extra-inning game by a score of 7-6.
The No. 5 nationally ranked Apaches are now 29-6 overall and tied for 1st place in the conference with a 13-5 record. The new national rankings will be released tomorrow March 26. The Apaches look to be ranked in the top 25 for the 4th straight week. The Apaches get back in action tomorrow Tuesday, March 26, for a home doubleheader against Chandler Gilbert Community College. The doubleheader will begin at noon.
