Amanda Nelson, a senior at Benson High School, has been active throughout her high school years in athletics and extracurricular activities.
Amanda participated in track & field for four years, competing in the pole vault, javelin, and 100 hurdles – qualifying for state every year. She was a member of the school’s Hip Hop and Cheerleading teams, with her team finishing 1st in regionals and 3rd at state her sophomore year. She competed in the pole vault at the Down Under Bowl in Australia the summer between her sophomore and junior years; she had fond memories of competing athletically against athletes from New Zealand, Australia, and the United States as well as visiting the Great Barrier Reef.
Amanda is also involved in several school organizations, including the FCCLA (current state vice president of membership), Student Council (sophomore class representative, junior class treasurer, and current student body treasurer), NHS, FBLA, International Club (president her junior year), FFA (Greenhand officer her freshman year), SkillsUSA, and the FCA.
She is an active school and community volunteer, helping in areas that include ‘Brighten the Path’, food drives, color runs, Red Cross blood drives, alumni dinners, Benson Middle School track & field meets, and all Student Council and FCCLA events.
Amanda will be attending Arizona State University after high school where she will be studying business law with her future plans of becoming a family lawyer.
Steven Coleman is a senior member of the Benson High School Bobcat track & field team.
Competing for the Bobcats in his fourth year on the varsity track & field team, he has served as the team’s co-captain while competing in events that included the 110 hurdles, pole vault, javelin, 4x400, 300 hurdles, and the decathlon. Steven has earned his was to the high school state meet every year. His junior year he finished 2nd in the state in the 110 hurdles. He also competed for the ‘cats in soccer for all four years, this year serving his team as co-captain.
His fondest athletic memories include the first goal he scored in high school soccer his freshman year and finishing 2nd in the 110 hurdles at state his junior year.
In addition to competing in track & field and soccer, Steven is an active member of the school’s NHS, FBLA, FCCLA, SkillsUSA (secretary), and FCA. He was an active volunteer with the NHS at the Benson Middle School science fairs and with the track & field team at the Benson Middle School track & field meets. In his free time, he enjoys playing the guitar and spending time in the outdoors.
Steven plans to attend the University of Arizona to study for a career in aerospace engineering.
Jaylin Richardson has been an active member of St. David High School’s athletics throughout her high school career.
A three-sport athlete, she has participated in volleyball, basketball, and softball (pitching and 2nd base). Her favorite high school sports memory was helping her school’s volleyball team take the 1A state title her freshman year while playing middle hitter.
In addition to athletics, Jaylin is a member of HOSA and is a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). She has volunteered at several of the school’s blood drives. After high school, Jaylin plans to attend college to earn a degree in nursing.
In her free time, Jaylin enjoys cooking as well as spending time in the outdoors (camping and hiking).
Jaylin is the daughter of Nathan and Heather Richardson.
