Bulldogs 6-1 to start season

The Douglas Bulldogs kicked off their regular season this week with a pair of wins.

Douglas pitchers Aiden Rodriguez and Victor Stuppi combined for a four hit 10-0 shutout over the Catalina Trojans in Tucson Tuesday, March 3. The game was the regular season opener for both teams.

The Bulldogs got on the board quickly scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. They added another run in the second and then doubled their score in the fifth scoring four runs to lead 8-0. Single runs in the sixth and seventh, gave Douglas its 10-0 lead.

Rodriguez and Stuppi allowed Catalina no runs off four hits while fanning nine and walking two.

The Bulldogs meanwhile, pounded out 13 hits. Leo Felix and Trey Rose each hit 3 for 4, Jose Ruiz was 2 for 5, Carlos Bello 2 for 2 for 4 and Ramon Gonzales, Marco Pena and Gaston Gonzalez each had one hit.

On Thursday, March 5, the Bulldogs were again in Tucson knocking off the Tanque Verde Hawks 8-6.

The Bulldogs had a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the third when Tanque Verde scored three runs to go up 4-3.

Still down a run going into the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs rallied for five runs taking an 8-4 lead.

Tanque Verde scored twice in the bottom half of the inning cutting Douglas’ lead to two at 8-6.

Robles, Stuppi, Ruiz and Zamora all pitched in the game for the Bulldogs combining to allow six runs off six hits while fanning eight and walking six.

Douglas pounded out 14 hits in the game as Rose hit 3 for 4, Ochoa and Robles each were 2 for 3, Bello and Pena were both 2 for 4 and Leo Felix 1 for 2.

On Feb. 27-29 the Bulldogs were in Phoenix playing in the Laveen Classic.

Douglas lost to Alhambra 8-6 in the championship game.

The Bulldogs began the tournament beating Fairfax 5-1 scoring all five of its runs in the fourth inning.

Rodriguez and Aaron Torres both pitched this game, combining to allow Fairfax one run off four hits while fanning 11 and walking two.

Douglas had seven hits this game from seven different players.

The Bulldogs then faced Alhambra, the same team they would have a rematch with 24 hours later, and pulled out a 7-5 win.

Damian Robles, Stuppi and Carlos Corona all pitched in this game. The Bulldogs had five hits this game as Jose Ruiz hit 2 for 3.

Next up was a showdown with Brown High School. Robles hit 3 for 3 this game and drove in fve runs in what was a wild 16-6 win.

Felix and Gaston Gonzalez each pitched this game allowing Brown six runs off 11 hits.

Douglas had 19 hits this game. Felix hit 4 for 6, Ruiz and Diego Ochoa each were 2 for 5, Bello 3 for 5, Rose 2 for 3.

In the tournament semifinals, the Bulldogs defeated Cesar Chavez 5-2.

Bello and Torres were both on the mound this game allowing two runs off six hits. Douglas had 12 hits this game. Bello hit 3 for 4, Ochoa and Rose each were 2 for 4, and Carlos Corona 2 for 3.

In the championship game, Ruiz, Torres and Ochoa all pitched, combining to give up eight runs off 12 hits fanning just one and walking eight.

Douglas had 11 hits this game. Felix was 3 for 4, Ruiz 2 for 2 for 4, and Corona 2 for 3.

The Bulldogs, 6-1, are back in action Wednesday, March 11 hosting Buena in a 4 p.m. home opener at Copper King Stadium.
