Fifteen former Douglas High School student-athletes had the distinct honor of being the first to be inducted into the Douglas High School Student-Athlete Leadership Council (SALC) Ring of Honor during halftime of the Bulldogs game with Walden Grove earlier this month.

According to Douglas’ athletic director Angel Ortega, the Douglas High School Student-Athlete Leadership Council is made up of representatives from each athletic team on campus.

“Council members were nominated by coaches based on athletic, academic, and overall leadership ability,” he said. “These individuals attend meetings/workshops to discuss leadership strategies, and have agreed to take on the challenge of completing athletic service hours, complete various school service projects, and serve as ambassadors of our school for various athletic events.”

Ortega added, in order to meet graduation with honors requirements for SALC, the council is required to complete a group project for the school.

“This year, they decided as a group to honor former DHS athletes who have made a positive impact for the school and have proven to serve as role-models for current athletes,” he said. “The council themselves decided the criteria, as well as the honoree per sport.
