MORENCI — The Lady Wildcats squad forced the Cowgirls into uncomfortable possessions, which made for a comfortable night for the ‘Cats.
Morenci beat Willcox, 55-21, on Thursday night.
“We actually started this new defense in practice that we played most of the game and, overall, we played as a team; we definitely got our defense down and knew our areas,” said Morenci point guard Desirae Babb.
Morenci started fast and stable, playing zone defense and putting full-court pressure on the Cowgirls, who had problems all night trying to find their way around that brutal defense.
The Wildcats forced turnover after turnover and went on a 13-1 scoring run in the first quarter. Lady Wildcats’ Brigid Silvester hit back-to-back 3s and helped her team go up, 20-3, heading into the second quarter.
Morenci held Willcox to 7 points in the second quarter, as Morenci was able to outrebound and score on second-chance opportunities. Morenci was able to take advantage of Willcox’s confused offense and push the ball up court and score in transition.
The Cowgirls tried to play zone defense and set up some full-court traps, but the Wildcats’ offense was able to break free and go into halftime up, 37-10.
The second half was identical to the first, as the Wildcats had their way on defense. Morenci’s Julianna Aguilar was crashing the boards and had back-to-back blocks on defense.
“One thing I felt that we did good tonight was that we worked well together and we didn’t get mad at each other and encouraged one another,” said, Willcox’s Alyssa Rogers.
The Morenci Wildcats (10-6) will host The Gregory School (7-7) on Friday, Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m.
Willcox (2-11) went on the road to face Valley Union (9-6) on Monday, Jan. 20 at 5:30 p.m.
