Former SVUSD teacher found guilty of sexual misconduct

CLOVIS, NM — Robert Michael Kelsey, a former sixth–grade teacher at Huachuca Mountain Elementary School, was found guilty Thursday of one count of criminal sexual misconduct with a child under the age of 13 in the New Mexico Ninth District Court of Judge Matthew E. Chandler.

The jury of eight men and four women deliberated for nearly three hours, according to Kerrilyn Webb, judicial specialist.

His sentence is yet to be determined, she added.

The charge stemmed from a Sept. 3, 2017, complaint of criminal sexual misconduct with a 4-year-old child, court documents show.

As was reported previously in the Herald/Review, Kelsey was taken into custody Jan. 30, 2018, by the Sierra Vista Police Department and placed in the Cochise County Jail.

Officers acted on an arrest warrant issued by the New Mexico State Police. He was taken into custody in early February 2018, but was then released after posting $20,000 bail.

Sierra Vista Unified School District put him on paid leave after his arrest, but did not renew his contract for the 2018–2019 school year. He was allowed to return to work in a position without any student contact.

Kelsey held a K–8 Elementary Education certificate, according to the Arizona Department of Education website.
