Jose C. Mejía Sr. will celebrate his 100th birthday with his family on Sunday June 22, 2014.
Jose was born June 22, 1914 in Pirtleville, the son of Andres and Valentina (Cruz) Mejía.
Jose and Socorro Felix were married on December 10, 1938 in Douglas at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
He worked 47 years for Phelps Dodge Smelter, before retiring in 1976.
During the time of the great depression he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and served for five years.
His children are Manuel Mejía Sr. and wife Lupita Ibarra Mejía of Phoenix; Lupita Mejía of Douglas; Minerva Mejía Kong of Douglas, and the late Jose (Joe) Mejía Jr. and wife Julie Elvick-Mejía of Tucson.
His grandchildren are Manuel Mejía Jr. and wife Elisa Mejía of Phoenix (great grandchildren-Manny III and Anthony Mejía); Arnold Mejía and wife Bonnie Mejía of Phoenix (great grandchildren-Daniel and Max Mejía); Sergio Mejía and wife Yesenia Mejía of Phoenix (great grandchildren Sergio Jr, Izel, and Naiya Mejía); Adriana Kong Romero and husband Frank Romero of Tucson, Jessica F. Mejía of Tucson, Joey Mejía of Tucson, Maria Teresa Mejía of Tucson, and Benjamin Mejía of Tucson.
Jose is an avid fan of baseball and played for the local Pirtleville Tigers as a pitcher and short stop. He helped his son Joe coach the little league team called the Spiders where his grandsons Manny and Arnold also played. His favorite baseball team is the St. Louis Cardinals. He has fond memories of playing in the Pirtleville Father’s day game that was held at the Pirtleville Veteran’s baseball field and was fondly referred to as “el juego de los de arriba vs. los de abajo”.
