BENSON — A Benson man died in a single-vehicle rollover accident Sunday afternoon.

Travis Shoemaker, 31, drove off a steep ridge while traveling on a dirt easement just west of Ocotillo Road, according to Benson Police Chief Paul Moncada.

“We got the report of a vehicle that had rolled off a ridge in the middle of Benson just west of Ocotillo around 2 p.m. Sunday,” Moncada said. “This is a dirt easement along the power line that extends down into a very deep ridge.”

After Benson Police arrived on scene, one of the officers made his way down to the wreckage and observed a single occupant in the vehicle, Moncada said.

The officer checked the occupant’s vitals and was not able to find signs of life.

Other agencies, including Benson Fire Department, HealthCare Innovations ambulance services, Cochise County Sheriff’s Office and Department of Public Safety also responded..

“The CCSO search and rescue unit assisted with the recovery of the occupant,” Moncada said. “At that time, they made the determination that the occupant was deceased.”

The incident is still under investigation, with a Benson Police Department detective assisting, Moncada said.

There will be more information once it’s available.
