The San Simon rest stop on Interstate 10 was evacuated Wednesday morning while firefighters worked to extinguish a semi truck fire.

Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves said a fire started in the rear axles of the truck around 9 a.m. and spread as far as the cab, but the driver was able to escape unharmed.

The rest stop was initially evacuated because responding authorities didn’t know if the semi truck was hauling hazardous materials, Graves said. It turns out it wasn't.
