Bernice and Brian Mabey of Hereford will travel to Papua New Guinea on June 5 to serve a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
“Our primary assignment will be to serve at the Port Moresby Temple Construction site,” Bernice said, “[where we will seek] to bring the spirit of the Lord to the site during construction, to document the construction, and to build reports on the construction.”
Brain Mabey added that missionary couples work under the direction of The Special Projects Department of The Church. He stated that missionary couples bring value to the project by being the eyes and ears of the site manager, without directing any of the work. They assemble document reports and compile a comprehensive record of the temple’s construction. They also research necessary information and take and assemble photographs.
The Mabeys moved to Hereford in September of 2022 to live with their son, Braden, after living in Page, Arizona for 34 years. “We raised our six children, three boys and three girls in Page,” Brian said. “It will be hard leaving family. We hope that [our service] will set a good example for our [14] grandchildren.”
Bernice exclaimed, “Our older teenage grandchildren do not want us to go; they will be sad that we will miss out on their graduations and participation in high school sports. But our younger teenagers and preteens are happy we are going on a mission. They also think two years will be a really long time away but are already talking about how old and big they will be when we get back.”
She added, “The young grandchildren will miss their grandma.”
Both Brian and Bernice shared their feelings about living in the area. “We have enjoyed exploring the areas in Cochise County during our short stay here. It is a very beautiful area.”
