TOMBSTONE — After a brief hiatus, the brassy sounds of the holiday season will be rumbling Tombstone City Park on Saturday, Dec. 15, when musicians present TubaChristmas.
This free concert features low brass players of all ages from across Cochise County and Arizona. Those who play the tuba, sousaphone, euphonium or baritone are invited to participate in the concert, which is presented free as a gift to the community.
Every year, a different conductor is selected to direct the ensemble, with the upcoming concert co-directed by Rebecca Robinson, a euphonium player who is the band director at Tombstone High School, along with Marty Huffman, tubist for Arizona Wind Symphony.
This marks the ninth TubaChristmas performance at the park, located on the corner of Third and Allen streets.
Robinson expects there will be around 20 players from all over southeastern Arizona.
“As the new Tombstone High School band director, I’m excited to conduct this event,” she said. “I’ve been a part of previous TubaChristmas events in Arizona before, as well as Ohio, and it’s a fun way to bring low brass players together to kick off the holidays in a long, time-honored tradition.”
The 2018 holiday season marks the 45th anniversary for TubaChristmas, with concerts presented throughout the world. Conceived in 1974 by late tubist Harvey Phillips, the first TubaChristmas was conducted by Paul Lavalle in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Dec. 22.
Low brass players interested in performing should plan to attend a rehearsal at Tombstone High School’s band room, 1211 N. Yellow Jacket Way, off Highway 80, north of town. Registration is 8:30 a.m. and rehearsal starts at 9.
Performers are asked to bring a $10 registration fee, an official TubaChristmas book — available for purchase in both bass and treble clef and used at all TubaChristmas events every year — along with their horn and stand.
“Performing for TubaChristmas is so much fun for those of us who love low brass,” Sheridan said. “It’s one time when low brass play melody, and it’s beautiful Christmas music.
“I hope all of you come and join us in the Tombstone City Park for the return of our little Christmas concert, which we plan to bring back as an annual holiday event.”
