A car fire that erupted Friday morning on Davis Road ravaged several acres of open land, shutting down the roadway between State Route 80 and Mile Post 8, fire officials said.
“It spread to a one-acre blaze, then quickly got larger,” said Tombstone Fire Chief Chris Alleman. The inferno had spread to at least 200 acres by Friday afternoon. At first, the inferno threatened a ranch house, but firefighters stopped it from destroying the property, Alleman said. The fire chief said vineyards were also thought to be in peril, but he later confirmed they were not threatened by the fire.
Command of the scene has been turned over to the state’s Department of Forestry and Fire Management Wildland Fire Suppression, Alleman said.
Tombstone Fire Department, Elfrida, Sunsites Pearce, Sunnyside Fire and the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, as well as state agencies, responded to the scene.
It’s not clear how the vehicle fire erupted, but Alleman said the car was not abandoned. No one has been injured.
