Arlene Shaw, 89
SIERRA VISTA–Arlene Shaw of Sierra Vista, died at Peppi’s House hospice in Tucson on November 18 after a short illness. Mrs. Shaw was born on December 10, 1929 in Emporia, Kansas to Ray Shomber and Alma Paddock Shomber. She married Roy Shaw of Emporia, Kansas in 1950 and was the mother of seven children, grandmother of seven grandchildren and great grandmother of nine great grandchildren.
She graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in 1951 and received her Masters degree in Library Science from KSTC in 1968. She served as a US Army librarian from 1970 through 1998, including service as Post Librarian at Fort Huachuca, Arizona from 1972 through 1979, and retired to Sierra Vista in 1999, where she volunteered at the Friends of the Library Bookstore for many years and worked in the Cochise College library for many years. Mrs Shaw enjoyed reading and travel and caring for her large library of books and her rescue pets. During her career with the US Army she was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany and visited locations throughout Western Europe as well as Egypt, Israel, Jordan and the then Soviet Union.
Mrs. Shaw is survived by her daughters, Rosetta (Joseph) McKinney of Corrales, New Mexico and Shanna (Gilbert) Melanson of Sierra Vista, and her sons Patrick (Valerie) Shaw of Hermleigh, Texas, Timothy (Judy) Shaw of Alton, New Hampshire and Daniel (Joyce) Shaw of Sierra Vista; grandson Jacob Shaw and his children Dylan, Abby and Annie Shaw; granddaughter Jennie Shaw Merkle; grandson Micah Shaw and his children Catherine and Jack Shaw; grandson Matthew Shaw and granddaughter Emma Shaw Essery; granddaughter Christi Shaw, and great grandchildren Alycia McGary and Nathan McGary; and step grandchildren Bobby Deavitt and Andrea Deavitt Leggett and great grandchildren Daniel Rachunek, Andrew Rachunek and Zoey Leggett; and grandson Roy Shaw, US Army and great granddaughter Eden, and step grandson Kristopher Fetters and step great grandchildren McKenzie, James and Zoey Fetters; and a younger brother, William R. Shomber of Kansas City, Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her sons Wesley Shaw and Michael Shaw.
Mrs. Shaw was cremated and her ashes will be scattered in the Sandia Mountains near Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she had happy memories of years living in New Mexico with her young family. Her family will hold a celebration of her life at a time to be determined.
She was a lifelong owner and rescuer of dogs and cats. Donations in her name may be made to the Sierra Vista Animal Shelter to honor her dedication.
