TUCSON—Philip K. Blumer formerly of Sierra Vista, passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2019 in Tucson. He was born in Algona, Iowa on May 24, 1926 to the late Paul Blumer and Helen Constance (Emrie) Blumer. Philip was the third oldest of four brothers. He grew up on the family farm and attended Lu Verne Public Schools, Luther College, and the University of Iowa.

Philip served in the United States Army and was a veteran of WWII, primarily serving in the post-war occupation of Japan.

He married Dorothy Jean Rempel on August 24, 1951 in Minneapolis. After farming for several years near Livermore, Iowa, Philip worked for the Dow Corning Corporation in Midland, Michigan for 27 years as a technical writer and then editor. After retiring from Dow Corning in 1983, he and Dorothy formed TechCom Associates, publishing periodicals, news releases and magazine articles for their corporate clients. After 11 years they closed the firm and began traveling across the country regularly, visiting family and friends and doing extensive genealogy along the way.

For thirty-one years, the couple lived in Midland, Michigan before moving to Sierra Vista in 1987. For the past two years Philip resided at the Ocotillo House, a residential assisted living facility in Tucson.

Over the years, Phil sang with the Dow Choir, Midland Men of Music, and the choir at First United Methodist Church in Midland, Michigan and at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church. While raising his children in Midland, Michigan, he served as PTA president and assisted with Boy Scouts. He was involved with the Audubon Society, the Chippewa Nature Center, and the Nature Conservancy. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Midland and the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church.

Philip is survived by his four children, Thomas P. (Poli Davila), Stephen P. (Paula), Ann M. (Sharon Frame), Curtis A. (Stephen Bean); grandchildren, Janna (Dan) Sheppard, Stephanie (fiance’ Kaleb Buesing), Andres, Mateo, and two great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Stella Sheppard; and his brother, James A. Blumer. He was preceded in death by his parents; Dorothy, wife of 62 years; two brothers, Ralph W. and John E. Blumer.

A memorial service will be held at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at 10:00 am.

Philip’s earthly remains will be interred in the columbarium at the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church and in the Homer Township Cemetery near Midland, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to the Sierra Vista United Methodist Food Pantry or the Parkinson’s and Movement Disorder Alliance in Tucson in his honor.
